Itinerary

Day 1CUSCO - LARES HOT SPRINGS - HUACAWASI

This Andean journey will bring you to the village of Lares, northeast Cusco. A morning drive will take you to make a quick stop in the town of Calca for a visit to the local market. Here you’ll have breakfast and buy any last-minute supplies. Use this opportunity to buy optional supplies and gifts for the children that you will meet during your trek.

Keep on a drive across the highlands until Lares. This town is known for its healing Hot Springs, and where you’ll have a relaxing soak in at the pools while our cooks prepare a meal before the trek. After lunch, you’ll start the hike on a 3-hour uphill path giving you good training for the days ahead. The Campsite of today is at the lovely community of Huacawasi. You’ll spend the evening at a local’s house, feeling like a family member with gifts of popcorn, sweets, and some hot tea before indulging in dinner with the rural atmosphere.

Day 2HUACAWASI – SONDOR - MISKI INU

Today’s hike consists of a challenging climb to the highest point of the trek, the pass of Sacsayllame or Huacahuasi (4400m/14435ft). This portion will take around 4 hours, assisted by our animal friends, horses to assure everybody makes it to the top. Despite the difficulty, you’ll be rewarded with glorious sights over the typical Peruvian mountainous landscapes, the surrounding peaks, and mesmerized by the beautiful patchwork of agricultural lands that can be seen in the distance.

The higher we ascend, the colder it will get. After reaching the summit, we’ll hike down to pass the beautiful blue-watered lagoon of Aruray Cocha for a nourishing lunch near the shores. Take time out to regain your energy as our cooks prepare a delicious meal. We’ll continue a 1-hour downhill walk across the Queuñas (Polyepis) forest, a typical Peruvian tree. Finally arriving at Inu Miski, this will be a wonderful place to sample hot drinks, in order to make yourself feel as comfortable as possible after your strenuous day. Before calling it a day, you will be having a wholesome dinner.

From this point, the tour continues by bus to the famous and beautiful town of Ollantaytambo, known to be the last conquered town after the Spanish invasion. You’ll have a visit to the old town ending with dinner at a local restaurant. At around 19:00 hours, you’ll embark on the Expedition train to Aguas Calientes, located just at the bottom of  Machu Picchu. Have a  well-deserved rest in a hostel.
