Which Inca Trail is right for you?
View Peru offers varying Inca Trails to please any taste in travel style or budget, and all of our packages are fully customizable.
Classic Inca Trail
Our Classic Inca Trail package is for those who are looking for the traditional, world famous Inca Trail. This trek is legendary for a reason – it is a truly incredible and once in a lifetime experience. Bringing you along the Urubamba River, up to the famous Dead Woman Pass, through lush cloud forest dotted with orchids and finally leading you to the Sun Gate for your first view of the lost city of Machu Picchu, you will enjoy every minute of it. This trek focuses heavily on bringing you past ruins as it a cultural trek, so by the end you will have seen numerous ancient relics and have a great background of history when you arrive at Machu Picchu. What is often not discussed however, is that the Inca Trail is truly hard! This doesn’t mean only the extremely fit can do it, but be prepared for a challenge.
Alternative Inca Trail
Although not the classic Inca Trail, this is still an ancient Inca Trail that leads you through the gorgeous Andean landscape to Machu Picchu. This is a great option if the Classic Inca Trail is booked up, as the government only allows so many people on the path per day. Also, if you are looking for a trek that is off the beaten path with fewer hikers to share the trail with, this trail will give you the tranquility and serenity you desire. Often called the Salkantay trek, it follows mountains and through the Lares Valley where you will constantly have views of the magnificent snow-capped Salkantay peak looming in the distance. While you will still see ruins on this trek, it is known for showcasing the natural elements of the area. You will go from arid mountain passes through thick rainforests with exotic flora and fauna, and wander through isolated plantations meeting local growers. However, on this trek you will not arrive at Machu Picchu by the Sun Gate, you will see a great view of it in the distance before descending to Aguas Calientes for the night, then explore the ruins in the morning. This is because it is not a trek through Machu Picchu National Park, which makes it easier to book and a bit less expensive than the Classic Inca Trail.
Short Inca Trail
This trek just picks up at the tail end of the Classic Inca Trail, allowing you to experience one day of hiking and arrive at Machu Picchu on foot. This is a great option for those who are not in good enough physical condition for the multi-day treks, or those who need to get a trek in but are limited on time. You will meet up with the trail at Km 104, from which you will hike up to the ruins of Chachabamba from which you will descend into a gorgeous lush forest viewing exotic birds and orchids. From here, you will eventually ascend to the Sun Gate and make your way to a viewing point to watch the sunset over Machu Picchu, before trekking down to Aguas Calientes to your hotel. The Short Inca Trail takes in all the highlights of the Classic, ruins, mountain passes, rainforest, and the Sun Gate just on a one day hike. So, if you cannot take the Classic Inca Trail, you will not feel like you missed out if you trek the shortened version.
